Enter the fascinating world of the Walkers, and explore what is means to be an American family in the 21st century. Though they live very different and conflicting lives, the Walkers find unity under the family roof. Relationships bend but never break as they strive to find their own identities and embrace each other s differences. This is a series to watch, raves the San Francisco Chronicle. Welcome home a family you can root for in one of televisions most captivating and insightful dramas. Calista Floc! khart, Sally Field, Rachel Griffiths and Ron Rifkin lead a stellar cast in ABC s critically-acclaimed hit Brothers & Sisters.
The second season of Brothers and Sisters saw the terrific top-notch cast hit their stride. The chemistry between Calista Flockhart's Kitty and the Republican senator she works for, played by Rob Lowe, is palpable, and their engagement this season makes for a charming thread entwining the tales of the rest of the Walker family. And what a year they're having. Sarah (Rachel Griffiths) has lost custody of her kids, but is now running Ojai Foods, and trying to navigate through the family issues that accompany the family business. Uncle Saul (Ron Rifkin) might be gay. Iraq vet Justin might be falling off the wagon. Affairs are lurking around every corner, tempting just about every Walker at one time or another. The sun around whom all the Walker planets spin, however, is still Nora (Sally Field), whose good humor and big heart go a! long way toward giving the clan the glue it needs. When Justi! n apolog izes for his snappish behavior at the family meeting the previous night addressing his drug use, Nora says, "No one expects you to be warm and fuzzy at your own intervention, dear."

This season, Nora gets some affairs of the heart herself, with a charming guest appearance by Chevy Chase as Nora's college draft-dodging beau, back in the states as a teacher but still exactly on Nora's not-quite-reformed hippie wavelength. But tension awaits in the form of Isaac (Danny Glover), Nora's political opposite, but absolutely her equal mentally and emotionally. It's satisfying to see a woman older than 35 have a real love life, with real sparks--and real consequences. --A.T. Hurley

Power consumption becomes the most important design goal in a wide range of electronic systems. There are two driving forces towards this trend: continuing device scaling and ever increasing demand of higher computing power. First, device scaling continues to satisfy Moore’s law via a conventional way of scaling (More Moore) and a new way of exploiting the vertical integration (More than Moore). Second, mobile and IT convergence requires m! ore computing power on the silicon chip than ever. Cell phones are now evolving towards mobile PC. PCs and data centers are becoming commodities in house and a must in industry. Both supply enabled by device scaling and demand triggered by the convergence trend realize more computation on chip (via multi-core, integration of diverse functionalities on mobile SoCs, etc.) and finally more power consumption incurring power-related issues and constraints.

Energy-Aware System Design: Algorithms and Architectures provides state-of-the-art ideas for low power design methods from circuit, architecture to software level and offers design case studies in three fast growing areas of mobile storage, biomedical and security.

Important topics and features:

- Describes very recent advanced issues and methods for energy-aware design at each design level from circuit and architecture to algorithm level, and also covering important blocks including  low power ma! in memory subsystem and on-chip network at architecture level

- Explains efficient power conversion and delivery which is becoming important as heterogeneous power sources are adopted for digital and non-digital parts

- Investigates 3D die stacking emphasizing temperature awareness for better perspective on  energy efficiency

- Presents three practical energy-aware design case studies; novel storage device (e.g., solid state disk), biomedical electronics (e.g., cochlear and retina implants), and wireless surveillance camera systems.

Researchers and engineers in the field of hardware and software design will find this book an excellent starting point to catch up with the state-of-the-art ideas of low power design.

For Yonz Aerup, warrior in training, life was simple: trudge through classes, play a few tricks, and generally have a good time before graduating into the Royal Army of the Illatzulian King. However, this illusion of peace is deftly shattered when a bandit clan attacks his school and steals a vital artifac! t of the Kingdom. The peacemaker that ended the last continental war, the object that ensured the balance of power between the kingdoms, is now torn from the hands of Illatzul, thrusting it into an unknown future. Wary of war, the King of Illatzul decides to send student ambassadors to occupy the eyes of the other kingdoms whilst he would desperately try to relocate and retrieve their key of survival. Though ignorant of the world, Yonz Aerup is sent to a foreign nation, where he must learn to cope with his new surroundings and emerge from being a pampered child of peace. Through events that rob him of his childish innocence, Yonz must learn to change himself if he wants to survive. He must learn that nothing is as it seems. No one is who they seem to be. Luckily for him, a winged guardian watches his path carefully. This digital document is an article from Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, published by American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and! From the director of Women in Love and Altered States comes a retelling of the literary classic that launched the most celebrated obscenity trial of the 20th century. In adapting the famous tale of unbridled passion, Ken Russell has made a moving love story and some of the most talked about television of the 1990s. Joely Richardson (Return to Me, The Affair of the Necklace) stars as the young, sexually repressed Lady Chatterley, whose paralyzed husband (James W! ilby, Gosford Park) urges her to find fulfillment and an heir for his fortune in the arms of another man. Sean Bean (Patriot Games, The Lord of the Rings) is the lowly gamekeeper whose scandalous attentions awaken her senses. DVD special features include an exclusive interview with writer/director Ken Russell, behind-the-scenes photo gallery, broadcast trailer, cast and crew filmographies and DH Lawrence biography. Those who believe British miniseries to be too proper and corseted may want to make an exception for Ken Russell's 1992, four-hour BBC adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's scandalous novel. Between the full frontal female nudity and empowering shed-rocking sex scenes, this is something for everyone to have a randy good time. To save you the bother of fast-forwarding, episodes two and three contain the very naughtiest bits involving the illicit affair between "loyal wife, good companion" Constance Chatterly (Joely Richardson) and Oliver Mellors (Sean Bean), gamekeeper t! o Constance's embittered, paralyzed husband (James Wilby). Whe! n he ins ists his wife take a lover and produce an heir to his fortune, he didn't have the lowly "wild man of the woods" in mind. Neither did Constance, but soon enough the woods are alive with the sound of heavy panting and frantic gropings up against trees. The production is impeccably mounted--no pun intended--and the performances (particularly by the daring Ms. Richardson) impassioned. Save for one dream sequence involving a black horse (a symbol of passion, one character helpfully explains), and the, at times, overheated musical score that threatens to overwhelm the lovers, Russell (Tommy, Altered States) holds his tendencies toward excess in check. --Donald LiebensonMAYBE BABY - DVD MovieJoely Richardson shines in Maybe Baby, about a thirtysomething British couple struggling to have a child. After dabbling in fertility rituals and having sex according to a rigorous ovulation schedule, Lucy (Richardson) and Sam (Hugh Laurie) find their relationship! tested by temptation; Lucy starts to yearn for a hunky young actor that her talent agency is representing, and Sam starts writing a seriocomic screenplay about their infertility--which he doesn't tell Lucy about, because she's already forbidden him to write it. Everything is fine until Sam delves into her diary in order to get a better grip on a woman's consciousness and learns more than he bargained for. Maybe Baby is a sincere and lighthearted movie, sprinkled with comic turns from Emma Thompson, Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean), Joanna Lumley (Absolutely Fabulous), and others. Laurie is solid, but it's Richardson's charm and intelligence that makes it work. --Bret FetzerAn unforgettably beautiful and surprisingly sensual film that you'll never forget. Cynthia and her slacker boyfriend, Buck, are on the road to nowhere when she takes a job as caretaker to the beautiful, wealthy, but terminally ill Eleanor Dunston (Joely Richardson). Eleanor! 's rich world seduces the couple until the two cook up a schem! e to hav e Buck marry Eleanor and bequeath them her fortune. But the strange triangle develops into something no one expected when each falls deeply in love.Although the concept sounds like something out of MTV hell--Henry James's The Wings of the Dove flies into the Seattle grunge scene--writer-director Meg Richman has fashioned a stunning and assured debut out of this modern-day reworking of the 1902 novel. Whereas Iain Softley's 1997 adaptation tried for something like Edwardian film noir, Richman opts for a take that may skimp on costumes but is far more lush on an emotional scale. Richman's plot is a loose adaptation of James, as a poor young woman (Molly Parker) takes a job as caretaker to a wealthy cancer patient (Joely Richardson) and arranges for her musician boyfriend (Aden Young) to pose as her half-brother in order to seduce the dying woman into leaving him all her money. If the triangle falters anywhere, it's in the problematic conception of the scheming lead cha! racter (Cynthia here, Kate in the novel), who's saddled with being paradoxically duplicitous and sincere in contrast with two much more sympathetic characters. Parker, usually an actress of amazing clarity, plays Cynthia with an unsuitable Real World flakiness and doesn't gain a foothold against her two costars until the end of the film. But it's those costars who send the love story of In the Shadows sailing into the stratosphere. Richardson and Young are a combustive and passionate duo, and make this unlikely mating a heartbreaking union of two souls whose common ground is an inability to express any kind of false emotion. Richardson is unsentimental and incredibly moving as she figures out what's happening and decides to use it for her own ends, and Young makes a surprisingly sexy and winning suitor; inarticulateness was never more attractive. Richman proves you don't need corsets and fancy hats to get at the heart of Henry James. Before falling victim to t! he bankruptcy of its original distributor, this fine film was ! more apt ly titled Under Heaven when it played at various film festivals in 1998. --Mark EnglehartAlthough the concept sounds like something out of MTV hell--Henry James's The Wings of the Dove flies into the Seattle grunge scene--writer-director Meg Richman has fashioned a stunning and assured debut out of this modern-day reworking of the 1902 novel. It is told through the experiences of Tasan, a high-ranking official and foremost Neo-Confucian scholar at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Because of Tasan's fascination with Western learning, then synonymous with Catholicism, he is exiled to a remote province for 18 years. In banishment he meets people from various social and religious backgrounds--Buddhist monks, peasants, shamans--whom he would not otherwise have met. The events of Tasan's life are effectively used to depict the confluence of Buddhist, Neo-Confucian, Taoist, and shamanistic beliefs in traditional Korea.
A subplot involves three young sisters, the daughters of a prominent Catholic aristocrat, and affords the reader vivid glimpses into Yi-dynasty women's lives, particularly those of palace ladies, scholars' wives, tavern keepers, shamans, and slaves. In contrast to the long-held Confucian stereotype of female subservience, this story illustrates the ri! chness of women's contribution to Korean culture and tradition! .
Encounter's detailed narrative provides a broad and informed view of nineteenth-century Korea, making it a highly useful book for courses on Korean literature and society. It will also be an engaging read for lovers of historical fiction. This digital document is an article from Polymer Engineering and Science, published by Society of Plastics Engineers, Inc. on October 15, 1995. From the author: The esterification of the hydroxyl group of starch with DuPont Surlyn was considered as pretreatment method of starch before blending with polyolefins. In treating starch with Surlyn, two different reaction conditions were taken to optimize reaction conditions. First, the esterification reaction was carried out in ! 110 [degrees] C xylene with oleic acid as a catalyst. Second, the reaction was carried out in a 90 [degrees] C mixture of deionized water and xylene with ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as an initiator. Starch granules would be swollen above the gelatinization temperature in water. In both cases, starch was modified by Surlyn to have good compatibility with low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The mechanical and rheological properties were examined for blends of the treated starch and LDPE. This system may be one of the biodegradable polymer blends that sufficiently retain properties as a packaging film.

Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen

  • From the studio that brought you the smash hits FREAKY FRIDAY and THE PRINCESS DIARIES, CONFESSIONS OF A TEENAGE DRAMA QUEEN stars Lindsay Lohan (FREAKY FRIDAY) in a hip and hilarious coming-of-age comedy for the whole family! When the always dramatic Lola (Lohan) and her family move from the center of everything in New York City to the center of a cultural wasteland in suburban New Jersey, she fe
What makes the Special Edition of THE PARENT TRAP so cool isn't just that you get to enjoy Lindsay Lohan's amazing theatrical debut, but that's it's filled with bonus materials you've never seen before. Hallie Parker, a hip Californian, and Annie James, a proper London miss (both played by Lohan) are identical twins who don't even know each other exists -- until they accidentally meet at summer camp. Now they're up to their freckles in schemes and dreams to switch places, get their parents (Dennis Q! uaid and Natasha Richardson) back together, and have the family they've always wished for!If you were a kid in the early 1960s, then you saw The Parent Trap with Hayley Mills--it's as simple as that. Now Disney has pulled the beloved comedy--about a pair of twins who meet for the first time at summer camp and vow to reunite their long-divorced parents--out of the mothballs and remade it with a decidedly '90s feel. This time, the twins act is performed by newcomer Lindsay Lohan, who plays both Hallie and Annie, who each live with one of their parents (Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson). Adversaries when they first meet at camp, Hallie and Annie become, well, sisters when they figure out that they are siblings. The comedy springs from their efforts to sabotage Dad's impending marriage to the gold-digging Elaine Hendrix, while reintroducing Dad to Mom. Quaid has a nice, loosey-goosey way with slapstick, as does Richardson, who plays a very funny drunk scene. --Mars! hall Fine On her second full-length album, Lindsay Lohan ! tries to leave her Disney image behind for good. And what better way to do it than by starting off with the stark "Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father)," in which the singer wrestles with her stormy relationship with her felonious father? Lohan Sr. also is the object of the tortured "My Innocence" (as in, Dad, you took it away.) But the best tracks here are the ones on which Lohan Jr. spares us the angsty therapy and delivers tuneful pop-rock. Sure, the kind of rousing mega-chorus used on "Black Hole" has already been heard--to greater effect--in Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone," but it's still nifty. Elsewhere, "A Little More Personal" begins with Lohan talking about how talking at the start of a song is "rad," but then it turns into a very Cars-like tune--and it's hard to think of a catchier band than the Cars. No wonder it all sounds so impressively slick: For this transitional album, Lohan has surrounded herself with a team of pros--Kara DioGuardi (who's also w! ritten for Lohan rivals Ashlee Simpson and Hilary Duff, and coauthored 9 of the 12 songs here), power-popster Butch Walker, and former Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody. The first two also put their producing stamp on a cover of Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me" that's even more upbeat than the original, while Moody applied his tech skills on the other cover, Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen." Moody particularly shines on "Fastlane," however, a super-catchy number that's one of four for which Lohan gets a songwriting credit. Has she grown up? Maybe not entirely yet, but Lohan is showing the promise of an honorable mainstream career. --Elisabeth VincentelliThea (Lindsay Lohan) is stuck in a dead-end job that she can't afford to lose. To stay employed, she fakes a pregnancy, and now she's milking her one big lie for everything it's worth. But faking this pregnancy is going to make giving birth look easy. Chris Parnell and Cheryl Hines also star in this hilarious come! dy.Labor Pains stars Lindsay Lohan as much-abused secre! tary The a Dixon, whose boss makes her clean his dog when it rolls in poop. On the brink of being fired, Thea makes a desperate claim: She’s pregnant! Fear of a lawsuit prevails and she keeps her job... but now she’s got to keep up her story. It’s a chore at first, but Thea soon discovers that pregnancy has its privileges; she ends up with a promotion and a fledgling romance--all threatened by the possible revelation of her deceit. Labor Pains has the kind of preposterous but plot-driving premise that might have made for a great screwball comedy in the 1940s. Unfortunately, the clumsy script fumbles every promising scene with obvious jokes and no sense of how to maintain the tricky balance of absurdity and genuine feeling that the story requires. The movie gets a boost from its bouncy soundtrack, Lohan’s likability (only a few years ago she was riding high from Freaky Friday and Mean Girls), and an enjoyable supporting turn from Cheryl Hines (Curb Your! Enthusiasm) as Thea’s caustic co-conspirator in the secretarial pool. Janeane Garofalo has a cameo as a talk-show host. --Bret FetzerLindsay Lohan leaps into her much anticipated debut CD with a blast of something that simulates warmed-over Led Zeppelin (the lyrically ferocious "First") and from there finesses it into a stylish experiment in pounding away at teen pop's predictability. Influences--not all of whom her 8-to-14-year-old fans will flip to, or even find, in their pinup mags--loom large: While the Ashlee Simpson-like rocker "Nobody 'Til You" winds into the Jessica Simpson-y "Symptoms of You," the lovelorn "Something I Never Had," taps a sweetly unself-conscious vocal vein that owes gratitude to the otherwise highly un-Lohan-like Lisa Loeb. Though Lohan might balk at the comparison--she is, after all, the "Ultimate"-spawning original teenage drama queen--fellow tween queen Hilary Duff's stamp is pressed firmly into stormy self-explorers like "Disconne! cted" and "Anything But Me." Where "Speak" intones loudest, th! ough, is in its least-rocking, most beat-propelled songs: The title track dips and bounces tantalizingly, begging hands-in-the-air listeners to "c'mon and let it out"; "To Know Your Name" digitizes a sexy hip-hop inflected dance number; and "Rumors," a J. Lo-like thumper (and one in a trifecta of pouts over the pitfalls of stardom) ends this disc on a don't-stop, bound-for-diva-dom note. -Tammy La GorceAubrey Fleming (Lindsay Lohan) was living the small town life, until the day she was abducted by a sadistic killer. After a frantic search, Aubrey turns up alive, but changed. She is missing limbs, but has gained a new personality - that of bad girl Dakota Moss. Her parents and the FBI think she’s suffering from delusions, but if Dakota is just a trick of her mind, why do strange wounds keep appearing on her body? Desperate and alone, Aubrey must now unlock family secrets to unmask a mysterious killer with a deadly obsession.Lindsay Lohan made a bid for stardom in a grown-up ! role with this overripe thriller, in which a serial killer's attack causes her personality to shift from model student to sultry stripper. The burlesque queen (named Dakota) may or may not be the subject of a writing exercise by student Aubrey, but once the latter is abducted and mutilated by a vicious killer, the former takes over, much to the consternation of Aubrey's parents (Julia Ormond and Neal McDonough). Director Chris Sivertson (who proved his knack for suspenseful material with The Lost) works hard to gild the nonsensical script with as much visual panache as possible (and he's mostly successful), but there's no getting past the dreary violence or Lohan's performance, which flounders in its attempt to deliver raw sexuality. Lohan's off-screen difficulties helped sink the picture during its brief theatrical run; undoubtedly, her stage routines (which are featured in an extended version on the disc's extras) will be the DVD's chief point of interest, as the m! ovie itself is too flimsy to draw much attention on its own. T! he suppl emental features also include an alternate opening and conclusion (which add nothing to the final product) and a blooper reel. -- Paul Gaita

When the always dramatic Lola (Lohan) and her family move from the center of everything in New York City to the center of a cultural wasteland in suburban New Jersey, she feels her life is simply not worth living! But no matter who or what gets in the way, Lola won't give up on her life's ambition: to be a star! In a crowd-pleasing movie treat bursting with music, dance, and excitement, Lola's fun-filled adventure won't be glamorous or easy, but it might just! show her that real life could exceed even her wildest dreams!Tucked into the middle of Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen is a charming sequence in which two girls from New Jersey (Linsay Lohan and Alison Pill) try to go to a rock concert in New York and have their illusions broken, then restored, and then broken, just a bit, again. Lola (Lohan) yearns for glory by playing the lead in the high school play and getting to meet the lead singer of a band called Sidarthur. Despite the spiteful efforts of a popular girl, Lola gets everything she wants without much of a struggle. Most of the movie takes place in a glitzy but flavorless high-school world with glossy teenagers dressed like a less discriminating Christina Aguilera. Pill (Pieces of April) shines in the thankless role of the geeky best friend. Also featuring Glenne Headley (Dick Tracy) and Carol Kane (Office Killer). --Bret Fetzer

Chris Parker (Elisabeth Shue) agrees to babysit after her "dream" date stands her up. Expecting a dull evening, Chris settles down with three kids for a night of TV ... and boredom. But when her frantic friend Brenda calls and pleads to be rescued from the bus station in downtown Chicago, the evening soon explodes into an endless whirl of hair-raising adventures! Babysitter and kids leave their safe suburban surroundings and head for the heart of the big city, never imagining how terrifyingly funny ! their expedition will become.Way before she grabbed an Oscar nomination for her searing performance as a world-weary prostitute in Leaving Las Vegas, Elisabeth Shue was known as one of the squeaky-clean actresses of the '80s. Having made a splash in The Karate Kid and the '60s-nostalgia TV series Call to Glory, Shue cemented her good-girl reputation with the charming but badly titled Adventures in Babysitting. Set in the John Hughes-style suburbs of Chicago, the titular adventures follow babysitter Chris (Shue), who agrees to watch the Anderson kids (Keith Coogan and Maia Brewton) when her boyfriend cancels their anniversary date. All is quiet on the home front until Chris is called upon to rescue her best friend (Penelope Ann Miller, also doing good-girl duty) from the seedy downtown bus station. She can't leave the kids, and she can't leave her friend alone in the big bad city, so she packs everyone in the station wagon and heads into Ch! icago. Screwball craziness begins as they encounter car thieve! s, knife -wielding gangs, gun-toting truck drivers, and, worst of all, Chris's duplicitous boyfriend. It's hardly mature entertainment, but Shue makes it work; when she wins over the audience at a blues club with her improv singing, you'll be won over, too. In his directorial debut, Chris Columbus (who later went on to helm the sap-fests Mrs. Doubtfire and Home Alone) gently skewers the suburbia white-bread mindset of the main characters, and plays up the comedy over the schmaltz with a subtlety of which he now seems incapable; the near romance between Shue and Coogan is played lightly and adorably. Look for brief appearances by art-house faves Lolita Davidovich as a college party girl and Vincent D'Onofrio as an unlikely savior. --Mark Englehart
