YES - DVD MovieIt's unsurprising that a movie written in rhyming verse would have stilted or self-conscious moments--but the sumptuous beauty, sinuous rhythms, and cinematic intricacies of Yes may astonish viewers who expect something stuffy or antiquarian. The plot is little more than an affair between an unnamed Irish-American biologist (Joan Allen, once the queen of repression in The Ice Storm, now becoming an art-house sexpot in this and Off the Map) and an unnamed Middle-Eastern chef (Simon Abkarian, Ararat), yet the movie explor! es just about everything: Marriage, religion, international politics, motherhood, and the nature of zero, while travelling from London to Belfast to Beirut to Havana. Writer/director Sally Potter (Orlando, The Tango Lesson) has enormous ambitions; Yes abounds with complex ideas and daring flourishes, both verbal and visual, juxtaposing the austere and the erotic, intellect and grief. If not everything succeeds, what doesn't is more than made up for by what does. Also featuring Sam Neill (The Piano, Jurassic Park) as Allen's aloof husband and Shirley Henderson (Topsy-Turvy) as a housecleaner with a philosophical perspective on dirt. --Bret FetzerWhen the truth becomes a weapon, power comes at a stunning price. Gary Oldman, Joan Allen, Jeff Bridges and Christian Slater deliver electrifying performances in this controversial, suspenseful and critically-acclaimed thriller that Ebert & Roeper and the Movies call "exciting and unu! sually intelligent, two very enthusiastic thumbs up!" Sometime! s you ca n assassinate a leader without firing a shot.Depending on your perspective, The Contender can be praised and damned for the same reasons. A political thriller with an insider's view, it's deadly earnest in its defense of truth, justice, and the American way, but writer-director (and former film critic) Rod Lurie resorts to the same manipulation that his film purports to condemn. But with political savvy, a timely idea (a female vice president), and a cast of first-rate actors, this high-office chess game is unabashedly entertaining. You can argue with Lurie's tactics, but you can't fault his patriotic passion.

In a role written especially for her, Joan Allen is outstanding (if a bit too saintly) as the Republican-turned-Democrat senator who is chosen by the president (Jeff Bridges) to fill a vice presidential vacancy. Bridges is a cagey chief executive, seemingly aloof as he gleefully challenges the White House's 24-hour kitchen staff but more than a match for the e! mbittered and unscrupulous congressman (Gary Oldman) who plots to destroy Allen's character with seemingly dark secrets from her past.

As a gender-switching response to the Lewinsky scandal, The Contender asks potent questions with its impassioned plea for integrity in public service. That makes this a film well worth defending, and the stellar cast (which includes Christian Slater and William Petersen) triumphs over most of the plot's hokey machinations. The ideas are more compelling than their execution, however, and although Lurie's climactic revelation is a vast improvement over the reckless cheat of his previous film Deterrence, it still threatens to tarnish the gloss of an otherwise fascinating film. --Jeff ShannonOFF THE MAP - DVD MovieOff the Map avoids conventional drama (hardly any event leads to an outcome you could expect) but the lean, sharp dialogue and superb performances make this movie a rich, human comedy. A young girl named ! Bo, living in the New Mexico desert, rebels against her bohemi! an paren ts by reading Forbes magazine and applying for credit cards. Her father Charley (Sam Elliott, Tombstone) has sunk deep into a paralyzing depression; her resilient, industrious mother Arlene (Joan Allen, The Upside of Anger) alternates between gently supporting Charley and railing against his zombie-like state. Into this off-balance family comes a tax auditor (Jim True-Frost, Singles), who--after being stung by a bee and lapsing into a sudden fever--becomes an accidental catalyst for change. In her movie debut as Bo, Valentina de Angelis gives a wonderful performance, head and shoulders above most actors her age. Campbell Scott's direction, as with his first film Big Night, is warm but not sappy; he has a gift for letting a story wander without it ever getting lost. The New Mexico landscape glows in the sun and helps give Off the Map a quiet but mysterious vision of life. --Bret Fetzer

Star-studded movie about the famous arti! st. Cele brated photographer and art impresario Alfred Steiglitz (Jeremy Irons) is shocked to learn that the extraordinary drawings he has recently discovered were rendered by a woman. Deciding to display the work of then-unknown artist Georgia O’Keeffe (Joan Allen) in his gallery without her knowledge, the fiercely private artist orders him to remove the collection. Once Alfred convinces her to allow him to become her benefactor and to champion her artistry, their relationship evolves as they fall deeply in love. Alfred leaves his wife for Georgia, but soon finds her rising star is poised to eclipse his light. As their relationship suffers, Alfred finds twisted ways to emotionally wound her, including taking a younger lover. Georgia’s search for solace moves her west, where she finds new inspiration for her paintings â€" and ultimately her own voice â€" in the New Mexico landscape. While there are numerous documentaries about the iconoclastic modernist painter Georgia O'Keeffe, t! here has been a dearth of dramatized renditions of her life. Maybe the waiting has not been in vain, because we now have this lovely and respectable biopic courtesy of director Bob Balaban. Georgia O'Keeffe stars Joan Allen as Georgia, and Jeremy Irons as the astute yet eccentric gallerist and artist Alfred Steiglitz. Though the couple's artistic reign was extensive and highly influential, the crux of this film's narrative centers on Georgia and Alfred's tumultuous love affair. Beginning with a scene in which Steiglitz is already exhibiting O'Keeffe's work, they meet on conflicting terms that lead to her staying in New York as Steiglitz quickly falls in love with her enigmatic charm. From here, the viewer begins to understand how Steiglitz fortified O'Keeffe's career and reputation in the art world, while he was detrimental to her personal life. Though the film does clearly sympathize with O'Keeffe's challenging relationship to Steiglitz, it also does a fair job of s! howing how important a character he was to the modern art move! ment. Wh ile Georgia O'Keeffe is a drama and not an art historical documentary, it does give one a solid sense of the period's intellectual climate. It focuses chronologically on the latter half of O'Keeffe's life, when she discovers solace and inspiration in Taos and Abiquiu, New Mexico. In the end, the film is also a tender portrait of a liberated woman who was a protofeminist and a fierce talent. --Trinie DaltonThe re-release of Jerry Aronson's biopic, The Life and Times of Allen Ginsberg, timed to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of "Howl," suits this wonderful documentary and proves Ginsberg central to all radical artistic and political movements of the past 60 years. The feature-length film, segmented by decade, provides ample footage of Ginsberg's life; but extras added into this package, including footage of his memorial and 35 interviews with artists inspired by the visionary poet--from Beck to Lawrence Ferlinghetti--solidify Ginsberg as an American cu! ltural icon. The film unravels Ginsberg's obsession for life and death around his mother's nervous breakdown and his father's affinity for poetry. Interviews with Ginsberg from each decade, both amongst his Beat friends like Burroughs and Huncke, and later with talk show hosts William Buckley and Dick Cavett, show the author's progression from sexual politics in the '40s and '50s to the "politics of ecstasy" in the '60s and '70s, when he founded the Flower Power movement with Tim Leary, and later, Naropa Institute. Ample footage of Ginsberg's stepmother provides a sensitive outsider's opinion on how he blossomed into one of the most spontaneous minds of the century. The film transcends simple Ginsberg descriptions by framing his life with historical happenings to contextualize the author's words and actions. The Life and Times of Allen Ginsberg reminds the viewer that there is no better example of an artist devoted to a life of letters, activism, and idealism than th! e original beatnik. --Trinie DaltonThe Crucible reprodu! ction Ap prox. Hira Pandit (Mahima Chaudhury) is an actress who is nothing if not full of herself. Arrogant and thriving on only one thing - people adoring her unabashedly, and without stopping, just loving her! So naturally when this adoration stars to wane, she can't take it. Her vanity can't bear the fact that her popularity is slipping, that she's not getting nominated for awards, that her films simply aren't working like they used to. And at this fragile juncture of her life she runs into Digambar (Priyanshu Chatterjee), an old friend, whom she used to lovingly call Digs. Somewhere along the way, their lives had traveled down different paths. He's a drunkard, an ex-lawyer now very much out of work, who makes a living, singing in a cheap bar. He's counted the days and months and year since they last met but on this night when they accidentally meet he makes the one mistake that he shouldn't have...he criticizes Hira. He tells her that she needs to reinvent herself, do new work, and be less predictable on screen. This sends her into a tizzy, but it also sends her towards events that change her life forever. Hira finds herself the bona-fide drama, a real-life one, one that will surely take her back to the top! It's the story of a loving, traditional wife, the murder of her husband, a father-in-law who heads a non-political but powerful organization and the secrets that lie behind the closed doors of his "bhavan". A volatile world, which she enters purely to exploit for her own ends - is also the one that soon takes over her whole life. She begins to get attached to the women whose juicy story she had wanted just for film. She begins to see the strength in her lawyer friend whom she had merely considered a failure till now. As celluloid clashes with reality, it changes her forever.Hephaestus Books represents a new publishing paradigm, allowing disparate content sources to be curated into cohesive, relevant, and informative books. Suddenly Tusshar Kapoor seems to be seen a lot more than what he used to till a few years back. He began the year with a guest appearance in Halla Bol, followed it up with an item song 'Manzar' in Sunday, tasted success with One Two Three and now would be seen in C Kkompany. While One Two Three also gave him a popular title song, one looks forward to what is in store for him in C Kkompany that primarily features four songs (two each by Anand Raaj Anand and Bappa Lahiri).

Set in a mood similar to that of the title track of One Two Three, 'Khoka' is a promotional number which kick starts the proceedings for C Kkompany. A fun song which heavily relies upon Western beats and arrangements, 'Khoka' is about the power of money which makes the world go round and how it aids in elevating the status of an individual.

Narrating the tale of the three protagonists in ! the film (Tusshar Kapoor, Anupam Kher and Rajpal Yadav) who turn from zeroes to heroes, the Shabbir Ahmed written 'Khoka' is a foot tapping number that has Mika Singh in the lead. Composed by Bappa Lahiri who also ropes in his Dad Bhappi Lahiri and sister Rema Lahiri to give Mika company behind the mikes. 'Khoka' qualifies as a time-pass enjoyable number which only sounds better after repeated listening. And for those looking for a Club outing, there is always a faster 'remix version'.No Description Available.

The Girl in the Park

  • GIRL IN THE PARK (DVD MOVIE)
Wo young women work as maids in a maui resort community. With othing else to do with their time the girls decide to surf. Hey become very good and enter an all-male contest. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 03/28/2006 Starring: Kate Bosworth Matthew Davis Run time: 105 minutes Rating: Pg13 Director: John StockwellNot to be confused with the 2002 feature film of the same title, Blue Crush is billed as the original all-girl surfer's movie, and it's guaranteed to please devotees of the sport. It's a mixed blessing, however, because it assumes familiarity with the sport and its superstars, dispensing with any educational or historical detail that would appeal to neophytes. After all, how can this film be dedicated to Rell Sunn (the pioneer of female competitive surfing, who died in of breast cancer in 1998 at age 47) and fail to explore her illus! trious career? This haphazard approach extends to profiles of the young women who regard Sunn as their hero; we learn little of their backgrounds and how they rose to prominence on the waves. Blue Crush works best as a globetrotting, music-video tour of surfdom's prime locations (Samoa, Hawaii, the Gold Coast, South Africa) hosted by the sport's most prominent competitors, including several (Rochelle Ballard, Megan Abubo, Sanoe Lake, Keala Kennelly, Kate Skarratt) who appeared in Universal's popular feature. It's a lot of fun, especially if you "hang ten" on a regular basis. --Jeff ShannonAcademy Award® Winner Geoffrey Rush, Kate Bosworth, Danny Huston and International sensation Jang Dong Gun star in this boldly original film that blends intense martial arts action with a dazzling visual style. After a lifetime of training in swordsmanship and hand-to-hand combat, the world’s most dangerous fighter (Jang) flees his homeland to start a new life in the Ameri! can West. But soon the hunter becomes the hunted, and now the ! legendar y warrior must wage a fierce, all-out battle against a renegade gang of outlaws and a pack of murderous assassins from his own past."This is the story of a sad flute, a laughing baby, and a weeping sword," a voice intones at the beginning of The Warrior's Way. It's also a story in which bullets fly, blood flows, and the body count mounts to the point where you'll need a calculator to keep track, often to the accompaniment of a Verdi opera. Writer-director Sngmoo Lee's film centers on a lone warrior named Yang (Jang Dong-gun), "the greatest swordsman in the history of mankind," who has managed to wipe out all of his enemies save one, that being an adorable infant whom he refuses to murder, much to the displeasure of his boss, the leader of a band known as the Sad Flutes. For reasons never quite explained, our exiled hero soon finds himself in a thoroughly dilapidated town in the American west, where a half-finished ferris wheel looms and the inhabitants consist mainly ! of a bunch of worn-out circus performers (clowns, bearded lady, midget ringmaster, the whole shebang), the town drunk (Geoffrey Rush, a very long way from his Oscar-winning performance in Shine), and a beautiful young woman (Kate Bosworth, sporting a ridiculous accent) whose family was slaughtered by a local bad guy known as the Colonel (Danny Huston, suitably sadistic). Yang improbably takes over the town's laundry service, plants a garden, and cares for the baby, but we know it won't be long before his real talents will be needed--and sure enough, when the Colonel and his band of filthy wretches ride back into town, followed not long thereafter by a platoon of acrobatic ninjas sent to dispatch our hero, Yang and the locals have their hands full. All of this is fairly ridiculous, but the movie has a surreal, painterly look (imagine a cross between Dali, Fellini, and a graphic novel) that's never less than engaging. Jang is no Olivier, to say the least, but he's hand! some and charismatic, and although the ending holds few surpri! ses (esp ecially once he instructs the Bosworth character in "the warrior's way"), genre fans are likely to be enchanted. --Sam GrahamGIRL IN THE PARK - DVD Movie
